Once upon a time . . . there was a man (that's me) and a woman (that's my wife Evelyn) returning to their home in the Ticino in southern Switzerland. During this journey in September 1993 we took a break on a high (8130 ft. / 2478 m) mountain road called the ''Nufenen Pass''. It was crackling cold with fresh snow from the previous night. The wide view overlooking the valley was overpowering, the mountain peaks looked as if they were covered with powdered sugar. Besides the two of us there was nothing but stones and boulders split from the towering cliffs. ''These stones are so interesting in shape and so brightly glittering in the sunbeams, I would like to have them in our garden ...'' said Evelyn who started to collect some. I would like flowers or tomatoes instead in the garden but I also like when I can fulfill one of Evelyn's wishes, and so the stones were loaded in the car. ''I want to turn those stones, which you like so much, into a sculpture'', I said to Evelyn and added, ''those rocks should fly!''. StringPhobia is something crazy, so to speak. It began 1998 with a real “stringy” idea. Instead only 6 strings as the StoneHarps before, StringPhobia shall have 288 strings. In summer 2002 artist Jan A Loeffler of Colorado Springs was able to get all 288 strings installed, each stretched with a music wire. Now, end of summer 2003 all the strings ‘’survived’’ rain, hail, snowstorms, cold and hot days and nights. StringPhobia is an Aeolian Harp but yet not adjusted to ‘’sing’’. Nobody awarded me the title of ''Installation Art Sculptor'' - no school, no university. I did not take an apprenticeship in ''Installation Art'' nor enroll in classes, but I am sure there are books and catalogs that explain the term ''Installation Art.'' I am very certain that there are art experts who know what ''Installation Art'' is. There are experts for everything; they know exactly what is what, that is, HOW something is supposed to be in order to be THAT. My problem is that I have neither the time nor the desire to care what art critics think.... Please use Site Search powered by Google till a Directory is available - Thank You! Why StoneHarpMan? Because: Worlds first StoneHarp, ''born'' January in Switzerland 1994, collapsed July 9, 2001 in Colorado Springs, U.S.A. According to the artist Jan A. Loeffler, the NUFENEN will be repaired because: ''It is the first sculpture I made ...'' said Jan. Today the StoneHarp NUFENEN is on display in the Sculpture Garden of Jan & Evelyn Loeffler, direct in the front of their house, providing much joy for people walking or driving by and even illuminated in the night. In the now empty space Jan installed an Iron Butterfly which is not another Installation Art Sculpture by Jan A. Loeffler, but a 4th of July gift for the garden of friends. Yesterday (July 8th) Jan installed ''legs'' to the butterfly - just in time to fill-in for the broken down NUFENEN.
